“As an openly gay, Dominican man whom some would consider only Latino, even my own family, I am Black first and proud of who I am and where my roots lie…Africa!”

About Me
My name is Miguel Villanueva—though to my family back in Santiago, Dominican Republic, I’ll always be “Miguelito.” I’m an openly gay Afro-Latino psychotherapist with 14 years of experience in providing affirming, culturally grounded individual and group therapy for clients who sit at the intersection of multiple identities—especially LGBTQ+ individuals and Men of Color.

I create spaces where you don’t have to choose between your culture, your identity, your truth, or your healing. You get to be fully you here—without apology. My therapeutic practice centers on emotional safety, deep respect, and the kind of honesty that leads to lasting transformation. Whether you’re struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, gender identity, sexual orientation, grief, or family rejection—I’m here to walk alongside you with compassion, skill, and solidarity.

I’m deeply honored to be part of BroKin™ Mental Health Solutions, and even more grateful to have been welcomed into this practice by Dr. Ifeanyi Ufondu. At a time when the LGBTQ+ community was still often kept at arm’s length in many psychological settings, Dr. Ufondu created a space where every person—regardless of how they identify—can show up fully and freely. His vision of radical inclusion and culturally competent care is not just inspiring—it’s life-affirming. He is a man of honor, respect, and admiration, and I’m proud to serve beside him.

My Approach
No two clients are the same, and no healing journey should be, either. I tailor my approach to each person’s lived experience, incorporating:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Queer-Affirming Therapy
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Trauma-Informed Care
  • Psychodynamic & Relational Therapy
  • Harm Reduction & Motivational Interviewing
  • Somatic Awareness & Mind-Body Techniques

I also bring a liberation-focused lens to therapy—acknowledging the systemic oppression and cultural traumas that often shape the mental health of LGBTQ+ individuals of color. Your identity is not a “problem to solve”—it’s a strength to reclaim.

Outside the Office
When I’m not in session, I recharge with psychological thrillers, resistance literature, workouts that challenge me, and deep convos about mental health in our communities. I’m an advocate of joy, resilience, and unapologetic self-expression. And yes—#BLACKAF is still on repeat.
